Under the melting snow of DeForest's west side sits land Park Towne Development Corporation hopes will become a destination for people all around the area.
"We hope this will be a park that the whole community is proud of and think is cool to be at," said Joe Ring, executive vice president of land services. "We're hoping to bring people in from a little further away."
Three acre Conservancy Commons Park is on Yellowwood Lane, just off of Innovation Drive in Conservancy Place, a 650-acre residential and commercial development.
Ring called the park family-oriented. It will include a children's water spray feature to open by Memorial Day, wide open play areas for kids, on-site restroom facilities and a canopy-covered natural stone shelter with picnic tables that will seat at least 80 people.
"This is a true community gathering place," said Ring.
Ring said the park has been designed to accomodate visitors of all ranges of physical ability.
The park includes slides and swings for people in wheelchairs as well as poured rubber base in areas to make play equipment accessible for people using walkers and wheelchairs.
The park will also attract nature lovers. It features landscaped gardens, natural prairie planting restoration and benches.
Respect for nature is a key element of the park, Ring said. He said storm water control, infiltration systems, rain gardens and natural buffers using native plants are all in place to make the park nature-friendly.
Ring said roads on each side of the park will have one-way traffic, to allow for more parking.
The DeForest Village Board approved the park plan in the fall. Ring said the park is almost built.
